SURF CITY, NC - The annual New Year's
Dolphin Swim on the Atlantic shores of
Surf City believes that their event
should considered the world's largest
such swim event.
With an estimated 3,000 swimmers in
2008, and more in 2009, this
annual plunge into the ocean is building
steam and very well could qualify among
the ranks of the top attended events
globally.
The 7th Annual Dolphin Dip
Extravaganza in Surf City has begun to
attract not just locals, but also
travelers from distant lands who show up
for a noontime swim in the Atlantic
Ocean.
Proceeds from the Dolphin Dip benefit
various non-profit organizations and
their causes.
The first year it was 20 people or so
who gathered at the shoreline to enjoy
the icy waters and wakeup of the year
2002. Now there's a t-shirt contest with
best design awarded a prize. Word of
mouth is powerful when people are having
fun, and the organizers say that it
didn't take much for the event to grow
into what they believe is the world's
biggest swim.
